Rheinmetall and MSC are interested in investing together in Romania by taking over the Mangalia Shipyard

“The takeover of the bankrupt Mangalia shipyard by Rheinmetall and MSC would open positive prospects for the future of the Romanian naval and defense industry and would mark the beginning of a new era. Rheinmetall AG is analyzing, in close cooperation with the Swiss company MSC, the realization of substantial investments in this location and the transformation of the shipyard into a dual-use hub, both for military and civilian shipbuilding.

They say that, in the long term, the shipyard could employ several thousand people, and the development of a dual vocational training system for the qualification of the workforce, as well as the establishment of a center of excellence and research could transform the region into a pole of competence.

Changes of the way the medical indemnity is calculated

Newly adopted Law no. 64/2025 brings three main changes in the field of calculation and payment of the temporary incapacity for work allowance known in practice as “sick leave allowance”.

These changes are:

  1. In the case of sick leave granted without interruption, the first day is not paid only once, regardless of the number of sick leave certificates issued;
  2. The allowances for the following sick leaves are not reduced in payment and are paid in full, even from the first day: maternity leave and allowances, maternal risk, oncological conditions and persons in national health protection programs. The medical allowances for people benefiting from medical services in a hospitalization regime are not reduced in payment either. For these categories of sick leave, the first day of sick leave is also paid;
  3. If the sick leave certificate was granted without complying with the legal conditions for issuance, the individual beneficiary of the sick leave loses the right to the sick leave allowance.

This Law enters into force on May 18, 2026.

ANAF will use pre-insolvency indicators

 The Romanian Tax Authority (ANAF) recently introduced a pre-insolvency indicator to assess the financial health of companies by analyzing their balance sheet data. This system allows ANAF to identify high-risk companies and trigger tax controls, including the verification of administrators as individuals, before they enter bankruptcy or insolvency procedure.

The purpose of introducing this indicator is to identify the risk of insolvency early, to prevent fraudulent bankruptcy.
